"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children."
-- Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa

Children’s Sabbath 2009 Rundown: Around Minnesota and the country, faith communities have been celebrating the Children’s Sabbath. Learn about what has been going on around the state and get ideas for Children’s Sabbath 2010.

  • Westminster Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis: At Westminster the children’s message and sermon focused on the needs of children in our community, particularly those who are homeless. They also took time during the service to commission the Social Justice Advocates in their congregation. After the service they held a Faith in Action Fair where congregants could get information of how to get involved in justice work in their community. Westminster is also collecting coats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats for children and adults in the community.
  • Mora United Methodist Church, Mora: At Mora United Methodist, the children sang ‘This Little Light of Mine’ with the Praise Team. They invited a special guest speaker working with Public Services in the job placement area to speak on Children. Their guest has held many positions dealing with children in their community, hosted several youth from Costa Rica through the 4-H exchange program, and very involved in current issues facing families in Minnesota, the country, and the world. I believe the word gets to our congregation and friends that we need to be proactive in order to accomplish making change for the better. No matter how small or large the accomplishment it all helps.
  • St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, St. Paul: St. Clement’s Episcopal youth, children and parents participated in a Cardboard Box Camp Out in front of their church. They had a simple soup meal in the evening and one of the youth told the story of the Good Samaritan and they discussed the topic of “who is your neighbor?” On Sunday morning they had a speaker talk about homelessness in the Twin Cities, particularly the homelessness of children and youth. The sermon was also focused on children and servant ministry. As a part of the campout, they collected money for Project Home.
